Huginn
Guide: Privacy

Privacy policy

A timeline is about the most personal record a phone can keep. This page says what Huginn records, where it keeps it, and everything that ever leaves your phone.

The short version

  • No account, no server, no analytics, no trackers, no advertising.
  • Your timeline is one file on your iPhone.
  • With iCloud Drive on, each day is also written to Huginn’s folder in your own iCloud Drive, for Muninn to read.
  • Apple hears from Huginn for place names and for the map’s tiles. Nobody else does.
  • I never see your data. Nothing in the app could send it to me.

What Huginn records

Huginn asks for each permission when it needs it, and records only these:

Places you stayed
When iOS reports that you arrived somewhere or left: the position, and the times.
The path between them
A position roughly every 500 metres from iOS, and while you’re moving, one every 15 seconds and 20 metres. With each position, what iOS measured alongside it: how accurate it was, speed, direction and altitude. When you stand still, the positions stop.
How you moved
Your phone’s motion history (walking, running, cycling, in a vehicle, still) and the pedometer’s steps and distance for each stretch on foot. iOS keeps these for about seven days; Huginn copies them before they’re gone.
What you tell it
Names, notes, check-ins and corrections.

Huginn reads nothing else: not your photos, contacts, calendar or health data.

Where it’s kept

Everything above is in one file in Huginn’s own storage on your iPhone. It is never synced anywhere. If you back up your iPhone to iCloud or to a computer, the file is part of that backup, as every app’s data is.

Days for Muninn. If you’re signed in to iCloud with iCloud Drive on, Huginn also writes each day, as it shows it, to its own folder in your iCloud Drive: the stays and trips with their times, places and positions, your check-ins and notes, the names of your places, and a name for your phone. Muninn reads them from there. The path of each trip, and your motion history, stay out of these files. iCloud Drive is governed by Apple’s privacy policy, and isn’t end-to-end encrypted unless you’ve turned on Advanced Data Protection for iCloud. Without iCloud Drive, the days go to a folder on your phone that only Muninn can read.

A backup you share. Settings → Share a backup puts everything Huginn holds into one file and hands it to the share sheet, for AirDrop or the Files app. It goes only where you send it. Keep it somewhere safe: it holds every place you’ve been.

What leaves your phone

Three kinds of request, all to Apple. Each goes straight from your phone to Apple, through Apple’s own maps framework, with no account and nothing of mine in between.

WhatWhat Apple is sentWhen
Suggesting a nameThe position of a place, to learn its street address and any business within 35 metres. The answer is kept, so each place is asked about once. For a new place on a day you look at, a few at a time. Never for Home or Work once Huginn knows them.
Places to choose fromThe position of a stay, or of where you are, to list the businesses within 100 metres. When you open the sheet to name a stay, add a stop or check in
The day’s mapRequests for map tiles, which tell Apple which area is shownWhen a day with stops is on screen

Huginn makes no other requests: nothing on launch, no heartbeat, no licence check, no remote configuration.

What I receive

Nothing. Huginn has no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising identifier and no usage statistics. If something breaks, I only find out when you write to me.

This website

This website sets no cookies, stores nothing about you, and loads nothing from any other domain. It’s set in your device’s own system font and follows your device’s light or dark setting. The server keeps the usual access logs; they are deleted after three hours, and error logs after 24.

Your rights under the GDPR

The GDPR gives you rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection. With Huginn you exercise them yourself, because the data is already in your hands.

Access & portability
Settings → Share a backup gives you all of it in one file. The days for Muninn are in your iCloud Drive, in the Files app.
Rectification
Correct a day in the app. Your corrections are kept beside what was recorded.
Erasure
Delete the app. With iCloud Drive on, also delete Huginn’s folder there (Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Storage → Huginn). No other copy exists, except in backups you made yourself.
Objection & restriction
Set Huginn’s location access to Never in Settings, and it records nothing more.

I hold no copy of your data to produce, correct or delete. If you think I do, write to hello@mymuninn.app and I will answer.

Children, changes, and contact

Huginn is not directed at children and collects nothing from anyone, of any age.

If anything here changes, this page changes and so does the date below. Before any build that sends something new leaves my hands, this page says so.

For anything at all: hello@mymuninn.app. Huginn is made in the EU by Mikka Luster.
